Studies on the Exploitation of Shade Tolerant Ground - Cover Plants (1)

Kim Yil-Joong
Abstract
The growth of Hedera rhombea, Ficus stipulata, Saxifraga stolonifera and Euonymus fortunei var. radicans under the controlled shading was studied for the purpose of exploitation of shade tolerant local ground-covers which are grown wild in Jeju Island.
Runner growth of H. rhombea and F. stipulates were promoted in proportion to the light intensity lowered. However, poorer growth was noted at 18% than 28% light-intensity level with F. stipulates. S. stolonifera showed same growth pattern with F. stipulates at all 4 light intensities, however, leaf number per a plant increased more at the lowest light intensity, 18%. The internodal length, leaf width and leaf length of these ground-covers showed a marked increase as the light intensity lowered. The poorest ground covering was observed with E. fontunei var. radicans, and no obvious difference in the growth behavior was found between the different light intensities. Exploitation of new shade tolerant ground covers in general was discussed.
